Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) fuel rods have become a widely adopted alternative fuel in industries such as cement kilns, waste-to-energy power plants, and other high-temperature combustion applications. But what types of waste materials can be effectively used to produce high-quality RDF fuel rods? Let’s take a closer look.
What Is RDF Fuel?RDF fuel rods are clean energy products made by processing combustible solid waste through shredding, sorting, drying, and compression. A well-produced RDF fuel rod typically delivers a calorific value of 4,000 to 5,000 kcal/kg, with chlorine content below 0.5%, ensuring both energy efficiency and environmental safety.
Typical raw materials:
Off-cuts from garment factories
Waste textiles and fabrics
Scraps of leather and shoe manufacturing residues
Paper sludge from paper mills
Waste cardboard and paper packaging
Plastic films and woven packaging bags
Key advantages:
Industrial solid waste provides a stable and high calorific value with relatively low chlorine content, making it ideal for RDF production. Its high fiber content makes it easy to shred and compress. However, materials containing PVC or other chlorine-rich compounds should be carefully controlled.
2. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)Common sources include:
Discarded sofas, mattresses, and furniture
Used plastic bottles and woven bags
Waste rubber products
Lightweight components from construction waste (e.g., bamboo, fabric, plastic)
Important considerations:
Municipal waste is abundant and easily collected. However, it requires thorough sorting to remove impurities like gypsum board, paint residues, and other non-combustible materials. The wood-based and textile portions are highly recoverable and contribute positively to fuel quality.
Examples:
Agricultural residues: corn stalks, wheat straw, rice husks, cotton stems
Shrubs, dry branches, tree roots
Wood offcuts from sawmills or furniture factories
Performance characteristics:
Biomass offers low ash, low sulfur, and low chlorine content, ensuring clean combustion and stable output. Drying is necessary before processing to improve energy efficiency and pressing density.
